Introduction and Synopsis
“Good Will Hunting” is a 1997 American psychological drama film. It was written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. It stars Robin Williams, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The movie tells the story of twenty-year old Will Hunting who works as a janitor [gardien / concierge] at MIT University and whose mathematical genius is discovered by a university Professor at MIT.
Will Hunting is from South Boston. As we previously said, he works as a janitor at this prestigious university and spends his free time drinking with his friends [= pals, mates, buddies]. However, Will is a self-taught [autodidacte] Mathematics genius; and Professor Gerald Lambeau (who discovered [found out about] Will’s expectional talent and skill) is desperate to help him.
Will and his friends get into a lot of fights and Will is eventually arrested by the police. Professor Lambeau arranges for Will to avoid jail time if he agrees to study Maths under Lambeau’s supervision and participate in psychotherapy sessions. Will agrees but treats his therapist with disdain and sham [= faux-semblant, comédie, imposture]

In desperation, Lambeau calls Doctor Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) – an old friend from university. Unlike the other therapists that Will had previously met, Sean challenges Will’s defence-mechanisms. During their very first session, Will is cocky and rude, and even insults Sean’s deceased wife. However, after a few unproductive sessions, Will eventually begins to open up.
